ABOUT LIZ MORRISH
I am an independent scholar and visiting fellow at York St John University, UK. I research and write in the field of critical university studies where I argue against the measurement of academics’ performance in teaching and research by crude metrics within such frameworks as the Teaching Excellence Framework and the Research Excellence Framework. I use techniques of discourse analysis to relate these coercive techniques of measurement to the ethos of competition and marketisation introduced into universities over the last three decades. I am the co-author (with Helen Sauntson) of New Perspectives on Language and Sexual Identity. Basingstoke: Palgrave, 2007, and a recent book on the discourse of managerialism in universities: Academic Irregularities: Discourse and Neoliberalism in Higher Education.
