ABOUT MATTHEW LIU

Website: matthewliu.ca My name is Matthew Liu, and I am an Honours Mathematics Student at the University of Waterloo. Previously, I was an International Baccalaureate (IB) Student at Cameron Heights Collegiate Institute from 2021 to 2025. I have been a speedcuber (of the Rubik’s Cube) since 2018. I have been ranked in Canada\'s Top 50 list in two events (7×7 Cube [#47] and 3×3 Fewest Moves [#32]), and in the Top 100 in four events (5×5 Cube [#67], 6×6 Cube [#51], 7×7 Cube [#47], and 3×3 Fewest Moves [#32]). I have participated in the 2019 Canadian Championship, the 2022 North American Championship, and the 2023 US Nationals (the largest cubing competition ever organized at the time). I will also be participating in the 2025 Canadian Championship in Montreal at the end of July. I placed 11th at the FMC Canada 2025, the Canadian Championship for the 3×3 Fewest Moves event. I am a sales representative for Cubing Out Loud, the largest Canadian-owned speedcubing store. I am a classically trained pianist with the ARCT (Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music) certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music. This certification involved the successful completion of the following exams: Level 6 Piano, Level 6 Music Theory, Level 8 Piano, Level 8 Music Theory, Level 9 Piano Performance, Level 9 Harmony and Counterpoint, Level 9 Music History, Level 10 Piano Performance, Level 10 Harmony and Counterpoint, Level 10 Music History, ARCT Piano Performance, ARCT Harmony and Counterpoint, ARCT Music History, ARCT Analysis. I was also a provincial delegate at the 2023 Ontario Provincials, which were held in June 2023. In 2023, I was accepted to PACT (Program in Algorithmic and Combinatorial Learning), a computer science and discrete mathematics summer program at Princeton University under Dr. Rajiv Gandhi, PhD. In 2024, I was accepted to Harvard\'s 7-Week Summer Program and took the \"Intensive Introduction to Computer Science\" course, CSCI under Dr. David G. Sullivan, PhD. I received an A Grade, the highest possible grade in the course.
