ABOUT LITON CHAKRABORTY

I am a policy analyst/advisor and interdisciplinary researcher with over a decade of experience at the intersection of environmental geography, sociology, public economics, and disaster and emergency management. Specializing in disaster social science, climate risk, and social policy, I apply advanced quantitative research methods to develop data-driven tools, equity-centered analytical frameworks, and innovative methodologies that inform evidence-based decision-making across government, academia, and community sectors. With a proven track record of leading interdisciplinary research and advising on inclusive policy development, I focus on translating complex data into actionable insights to advance resilience, social well-being, and climate adaptation. At ESDC, I lead national initiatives that leverage data and foster collaboration across sectors to design inclusive, impactful public policies. My work emphasizes social and environmental justice, with expertise in socioeconomic vulnerability assessments, environmental equity, and climate adaptation strategies. My research has directly shaped the development of the Canadian Index of Socioeconomic Vulnerability (CISV) and the Canadian Index of Socioeconomic Resilience (CISR), released by Statistics Canada and now supporting policy, emergency preparedness, and community resilience nationwide. Previously, I provided strategic guidance as a Climate Change Adaptation Advisor with the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change, contributing to provincial climate resilience strategies. I also contribute to York University as an adjunct member in the graduate program for disaster and emergency management, and as a visiting scholar in the School of Administrative Studies within the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies. In these roles, I bring practical experience into graduate-level teaching, mentor student research, and assist in shaping strategic policies for disaster risk reduction. Recognized for advancing equity in climate action, vulnerability analysis, and community resilience, I remain committed to driving interdisciplinary research and analytics that support transformative, justice-oriented policy outcomes.
