ABOUT LISSIE MCALVEY
I\'m passionate about sparking children\'s curiosity and giving students support to be resilient, engaged, empathetic people. I continually find myself gravitating towards collaborative experiences that seek to create student-centered, culturally-responsive, equity-based learning for kids. After falling in love with educational spaces as a student volunteer, I received my bachelors degree in math and education from Wheaton College before student teaching in Wheaton Public Schools. I then spearheaded a new middle school math curriculum-overhaul and taught Mathematics as well as the Humanities to fifth grade students in Michigan. Always drawn to innovative teaching practices and opportunities, I then moved to a role in Chicago as one of two founding teachers at a start-up school, H&B Academy. My appetite for non-traditional, culturally pluralistic instruction next compelled me to moved across the country to join the robust collaborative practice at The Nueva School where I also coached basketball, oversaw the schedule, chaperoned students on domestic and international trips, served as the social justice faculty representative and led the fifth grade teaching team as the grade-level dean. Eager to diversify my teaching experience further yet, I now teach 8th grade students at San Francisco Friends School in the mission neighborhood.
