Since 2016 I have been teaching sustainable design thinking and creative problem solving through the medium of theatre arts. I established a “backstage arts” Creative Team mentoring student leaders, and overseeing 40+ individuals in their learning and development. I encourage students to explore their artistic talents through hair and makeup design, costuming, set/prop decoration, while also structuring opportunities for students to develop confidence in their leadership and communication abilities.I thrive under pressure with big expectations and few resources. I like encouraging students to use unconventional materials to execute a creative vision as a group. Some favorite projects- Transforming hundreds of newspaper into an illuminated stage backdrop of enormous paper roses for Beauty and the Beast- Personally collecting 120 sheets of cardboard from Costco locations and leading a group of 12 students to create five 5ftx3ft dragon heads operational for real sword battle in a Dungeons & Dragons play- Turning dozens of plastic bags into “plarn” and braiding it to decorate hats and costumes for Once on this Island- Transforming 1980s prom dresses into SIX the musical regal rock opera costumes.It is my greatest joy to see students find their talents and a community of peers that value their gifts.
