ABOUT LISA CAMILLO

Human Rights-Driven Filmmaker | Anthropologist | Writer | Podcaster Lisa Camillo is a visionary storyteller and filmmaker whose work combines art, authenticity, and social impact. As the founder of Against the Tide Films, she has received international acclaim for her award-winning documentaries and films, showcased at over 20 prestigious international festivals and screened in cinemas across Australia and the United States. Lisa is the author of Una Ferita Italiana (An Italian Wound), based on her feature documentary Balentes – The Brave Ones. This film, which won multiple awards and had theatrical releases in Australia and the U.S, prompted her invitation to the Italian Parliament in 2019 to discuss its critical findings with the Ministries of Defence and Health. In 2020, she directed Italy Covid Hotline, a 25-minute documentary for Al Jazeera, telling a compelling pandemic story in Milan. The film was shortlisted for the IDA and AIB Awards, further cementing her reputation as a filmmaker tackling urgent sociopolitical issues. With a Master’s degree in International Development and expertise spanning anthropology, politics, human rights, and environmental studies, Lisa’s films explore the intersection of humanity and nature. Her Australian-Italian heritage and cross-cultural experiences, including work with Indigenous communities, lend a unique depth and sensitivity to her storytelling. Lisa’s technical expertise includes advanced camera work, aerial and dynamic shooting, and post-production mastery with tools like Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro. Her bold and immersive approach delivers visually stunning, emotionally resonant films that challenge and inspire. Driven by a passion for human rights and authentic storytelling, Lisa continues to create films, podcasts, and written works that spark meaningful conversations and inspire change.
