I love to work within close knit, open minded teams and the unexpected solutions that come from being able to bounce ideas of others. Wherever I work, communication is key. Department heads may be unaware of risks that are inherent in their daily processes. Many people are surprised at how much value brainstorming can have in terms of finding risks. I am an expert in finding risks and identifying what mechanisms can be put in place to mitigate them. In a typical financial organisation, risk is everywhere but there are 100s or even of possible controls for them, and I have developed an almost instinctive ability to choose the right one. The guidelines I use in financial organisations - known as the operational risk framework, apply to other industries too, such as aviation and pharmacueticals - and what amazes me is how often implementing common sense and good communication can solve and prevent things from going wrong. Simple solutions that are worth putting in place to avoid situations ending badly and hundreds of thousands of pounds being lost and wasted. In a way, I see my job as being a guardian for the company I work for - not only with saving money, but in keeping their reputation intact, building integrity, protecting their staff and ensuring they feel peace of mind within the wider world.
