ABOUT LISA KENNEDY
I’m a student, researcher, and advocate committed to advancing equity in rural and other historically marginalized communities. Originally from rural northern Wisconsin, I am a first-generation, low-income college graduate with a deep interest in how institutions shape, and are shaped by, place, power, and identity.I graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Georgetown University with a B.A. in American Studies, where I was awarded the Mita Prize for my senior thesis on white identity and treaty rights in the Wisconsin Walleye War. As an Allbritton Scholar at the University of Oxford, my master’s research will examine the connection between conservatism and conservation under Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson (19••••01).My work spans policy, research, and community organizing. I’ve interned at the U.S. Department of Education and Federal Student Aid, developed equity tools with the Rural Schools Collaborative, and published on tribal gaming and rural access to higher education. I also led the Georgetown Scholars Program (GSP) Student Board and founded the Georgetown Association of Small Town and Rural Students (GU STARS).Across all of my work, I aim to bridge service and scholarship, challenging extractive systems while building long-term, place-based solutions alongside the communities I serve.
