I studied and worked in social and health sciences; commercial real estate development and asset management; green building; residential construction and affordable housing. I created a development company to address the housing crisis in a holistic way. The goal was to combine the best of green building, environmental stewardship, human health and well-being, affordable housing, regenerative agriculture, community support, social justice, and education. We use the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework because it is apparent that the smallest decisions we all make create waves of impact. That impact can easily shift to positive or negative. To avoid unintended negative consequences, the right questions must be asked. A framework considering such a broad spectrum of effects is precisely what we were searching for and discovered in the UN SDGs.
