ABOUT LINDA WHITE

I am a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto and Co-Director fo the Equity in Education Research Lab https://equityeducation.ca/equity-in-education/. I analyze and compare welfare states, focusing particularly on social and family policies (e.g, early childhood education and care, maternity and parental leave, etc.). In my book, Constructing Policy Change, I track childcare policies and programs in several countries to ascertain what mechanisms are used by advocates to push for positive change. I’m also working with several academic colleagues on a SSHRC-funded project examining school choice. Namely, we’re investigating the effects that increased school choice (e.g, public funding of private schools, alternatives within public education systems, etc.) has on political and social citizenship. I also interrogate the ideas and norms that inform public policy development, especially regarding gender and women’s issues. My textbook, Women, Politics, and Public Policy (co-authored with Jacquetta Newman and Tammy Findlay) is frequently incorporated into political science and women’s studies courses to help students grasp the relationship of women’s political activity to public policy and social change. In addition, I am Co-Director of the Equity in Education Research Lab, which analyzes how early years, education, and training should prepare children and youth to be resilient learners in the face of economic and social disruptions, including disruptive technologies.
