WORK HISTORY
Professor @Robert Gordon University
Aberdeen, GB
I lead an internationally respected research team, CyanoSol, which has a worldwide reputation in the study of the environmental impact and monitoring of natural toxic metabolites from cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). These toxins pose a significant and increasing risk to human health in both drinking water and at recreational sites hence much of our work is involved in water treatment strategies including advanced oxidative techniques. My group has pioneered the most widely used analytical procedure for analysis of microcystins, the main group of cyanotoxins. This methodology has now been published as an approved method and has been cited over 600 times in scientific literature. My research has now widened into broader environmental concerns such as desalination and waste valorisation through using green chemical and biotechnology. I have successfully attracted funding from a wide range of sources including the Research Councils, EU, Charities and Industry. The reputation of my group has led to many fruitful research collaborations both in the UK and around the world including, Germany, Finland Denmark, Spain, Israel, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, India, Ghana and Pakistan. Over 20 researchers from around the world have made research visits, working in my group which has produced a number of key publications in my field.
