ABOUT LINDA COLLINS
Two of my greatest passions in life guide me every day, both in my work, and in my personal life. These passions involve helping to improve the quality of life for two very specific populations - for older adults, and for individuals recovering from mental illnesses. OLDER ADULTS: My First Passion Since my first visit to a nursing home at age 12 as a volunteer, I felt an immediate connection with, and compassion for, older adults. I was fortunate to have had close relationships with my grandparents, and have been privileged to be involved in managing the care of my parents as they age. Quality eldercare services will continue to be in high demand, especially with the Silver Tsunami of Baby Boomers hitting retirement age. INDIVIDUALS RECOVERING FROM MENTAL ILLNESS: My Second Passion Statistics show that 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experience mental illness in a given year. I am close to several individuals who have been diagnosed with a severe mental illness. Having walked beside them in their recovery has provided an opportunity to witness the incredible capacity that we have to be resilient. While care for individuals recovering from mental illness has made great strides in the past few decades, there is still work to be done to erase the stigma that exists. There continues to be great need for behavioral health services, and for affordable, supportive housing for those individuals recovering from mental illnesses. These are two of the passions that help guide me every day, both in my work, and in my life.
