Currently 1 in 5 children leave primary school unable to read properly and never catch up*. These children do less well at school, have dramatically reduced employment choices and earning opportunities, and a greater chance of going to prison. The UK has the worst literacy rates in the developed world.Read with me runs a simple, low cost scheme through which employers give employees half an hour twice a week to hear children read in a local school.The scheme is vitally important to ensure that our youngest children, from the most challenging backgrounds, learn to read and communicate well.
