ABOUT LINA MERCHAN

I am a scientist with 7 years of experience doing high performance computing of biological systems. I am good at problem solving and have extensive computational experience doing parallel computing and managing large amounts of data. I have been working for the past year and a half on improving the reconstruction software used in Breast Cancer Diagnostic Imaging with Tomosynthesis and Breast CT. My career, so far:When I finished my PhD in Physics from Georgia Tech, I was a postdoctoral researcher in the Physics Department at Emory University for a year and a half doing research in System Biology. Afterwards, I started another postdoctoral position in the Math Department at the same University using parallel computing to improve dignostic Imaging. I continued that work with a postdoctoral position in the Radiology Department. I was able to transfer to diagnostic imaging research because I took classes for the Masters in Medical Physics during my PhD. The work I currently do combines understanding the interaction of X-rays with tissue, the mechanics of scanning technologies such as digital tomosynthesis and CAT, inverse problem and parallel computing of GPUs. I work on a software to aid in the detection of breast cancer by improving the 3D reconstruction of the breast based obtained with digital tomosynthesis. I am expanding the utilities of this software to work with the much larger data set taken with a breast CAT scan.
