About Lillian Chatham
I am passionate about improving health and am determined to solve problems to improve our world. I develop products inside and outside the body, from head protection to medical device solutions. I thrive in a challenging, collaborative, and goal-driven environment. As an engineer working for multiple start-ups/small companies, I have had the opportunity to work on many projects, be involved in different stages of product development, and support success in a variety of roles. Currently, I am leading a 510(k) premarket submission for a Class II implantable device, which includes completing a material master file, developing the device, and verification and validation testing. I have also supported a Class II spinal guide following FDA clearance that involved interacting with spine surgeons from the initial design of patient-specific guides to manufacturing and surgery. Through my expertise in head injury criteria, I established our sports and military helmet impact testing according to various standards (e.g, NOCSAE, DOT, and ASTM). I spearheaded our year-long NFL Helmet Challenge that led to a top-performing football helmet prototype and our year-long US Army grant for optimization of the combat helmet. Both led to additional funding for further development, and the research in football helmets resulted in a publication in the Journal of Sport Engineering and Technology. I received a Bachelor\'s and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, focusing on biomechanics due to my desire to help people. My research (and ultimately Master’s thesis) was on the material and design of spine implants for optimization of lumbar spine fusion, which led to a publication in the Journal of Biomechanical Engineering.
