I’m currently working on the Breakthrough discoveries for Thriving with Bipolar Disorder (BD²) study. BD² is a multisite collaboration with five other imminent institutions, including Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Harvard/McLean, University of Michigan, and UCLA. Our site will be enrolling 100 subjects in the first year, then potentially more as we go in to the second and third years of the five-year project. This research study is designed to fill gaps in our understanding of bipolar disorder. This study involves collecting information from participants to answer key questions relevant to bipolar disorder which might help change or improve the way we do things in the future.The study will conduct deep phenotyping of patients with bipolar 1 disorder, including annual blood and saliva collection, MRIs, tests of neurocognitive functioning, mood state assessments, and more as the largest and most comprehensive prospective longitudinal study ever conducted in bipolar disorder. This data will be used to identify key clinical (e.g, recurrence rate, comorbid diagnoses, early life adversity, sleep quality, cardiovascular risk), neural (e.g, structural changes in gray matter, white matter disease, cognitive deficits), and biological (e.g, peripheral inflammation, elevated stress hormones) factors that drive poor outcomes in bipolar disorder. Across all of the sites, the project will build a Learning Health Network aimed at integrating clinical care and research to provide better outcomes for subjects in real time as well as attempting to accurately identify disease trajectory. Since a common age of onset of bipolar disorder is 25 years old, 30% of the cohort will be 30 years or younger at the time of study entry to allow for a sufficient investigation into the early stages of the disease.

ABOUT LIJIN JOSE
I am a driven and outgoing medical school graduate with a strong aspiration to pursue a career in neuropsychiatry and behavioral neurology. My passion lies in mental health, particularly in mood disorders, aging, and dementia. My professional journey began as a medical assistant in a bustling primary care facility, and I later transitioned to working as a research assistant under Professor Antonio L. Teixeira at UT Health in Houston. During my time there, I contributed to several projects involving non-invasive neuromodulation techniques, such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), aimed at treating neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders like Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease. Additionally, I focused on identifying inflammatory biomarkers, neuroimaging, and establishing risk factors for the development of behavioral and cognitive disorders in the elderly. Currently, I am affiliated with the UTHealth Center of Excellence on Mood Disorders, where my work centers on Bipolar disorder. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, meeting new people, and traveling both locally and internationally. Beyond my medical research interests, I have a keen interest in history, geography, and cultural studies.
