About Erica Handelman

Hi, I’m Erica and I’m a software engineer at Procter & Gamble. Before becoming a programmer, I worked as a certified optician and an English teacher, where I developed a knack for helping people navigate complex topics, like optics and Shakespeare. I’ve always been fascinated by the way people process language and information, which led me to study English in college and pursue communications-based professions. As a developer, asking thoughtful questions and promoting dialogue has continued to serve me, as it did in customer service and education. Technology has always been an integral part of my work, as it is for so many professionals. During my tenure as an optician, I used practice management software and insurance verification websites on a daily basis; when I was a teacher, I relied on tech to drive engagement and manage classwork. Eventually I recognized the power of software to help people stay informed and productive (or, on the flip side, completely disrupt their workflow), so I decided to build it myself! I completed the Java track of Tech Elevator and then an apprenticeship with P&G, emerging a full-stack developer with a focus in Vue.js with AWS integrations. After spending over a year diving into web applications, I spent six months working in mobile on an iOS app built in SwiftUI. My current focus is cloud and API technologies, including Google Cloud and Apollo.
