ABOUT LIBIA JIMÉNEZ CHÁVEZ

I am a 20th century U.S. historian focusing on labor, politics, migration, and Latinx histories. In the context of the U.S. Immigration Reform and Control of 1986, my dissertation examines how non-state actors – brokers and beneficiaries – interpreted and influenced the federal immigration policy, specifically the law\'s legalization provision which “granted” legal status to 2.7 million undocumented immigrants. More broadly, I am interested in the relationship between residency status, state power, and social citizenship.
