What do you want to be when you grow up?” We all were likely asked this question in our childhood, but I don’t know how often the answer remains the same as we age. In my case, I’ve known I wanted to be an actor since first seeing Tom Hanks in “Bosom Buddies” when I was a toddler.(I also told my parents ‘That guy is gonna be a star some day’, but let’s stay on topic.)I made up my mind to be an actor and I have been working in the arts & entertainment industry in some capacity since I was five years old. I’ve done a multitude of jobs within this world, as I’ve been:An actor on stage, on-camera, in print, and behind the microphone; A theater director and assistant director; A theater designer working in costumes, lighting, set, sound, and stage management; A teacher and coach, working with a range of people from kids to adults, and newbies to seasoned professionals, on acting technique;A producer for audio post-production work;A voiceover casting director for commercials, documentaries, explainer videos, and corporate narration. But, there comes a time in every person’s life when they eventually have to narrow down their field and focus more intently in a particular area. Right? Well, my love for acting never diminished, but I did find two other equal passions in this biz of show, so the best I could do is hone into three clear fields (see what I did there?) and they’re all in the voiceover industry. Voiceover Activate is a trifecta of voice over acting, coaching, and casting, all being done by me out of my broadcast-quality home studio. I love working in the voice industry and I love getting to do so many different jobs within it. They all feed each other – I’m a better actor because I get to listen to other talented people perform when I’m casting them in a project; I’m a better casting director because I speak the language of the actor and understand their process and can convey that to the client; I’m a better coach because I know what clients are listening for when I cast their projects and how to speak to the talent in a way that is helpful for them and in which they can learn. All of these realms of VO have shaped me to become a more well-rounded professional who knows how to acquire, build, and deliver the goods to my clients. The first time.
