ABOUT LIAM TIMMINS

Currently undertaking an MSc in Urban Planning with Green Infrastructure and Landscaping - looking at opportunities commencing September 2023For the last 10 years I’ve run an expanding tree surgery and arboricultural consultancy business that covered the whole of the north east. During this I provided tree surveys, arboricultural impact assessments and tree protection plans. I also supplied Duty of Care tree surveys, dealt with Tree Preservation Orders and worked with clients whose land was within the boundaries of Conservation Areas and sites of special scientific interest 18 months I purchased a development site in County Durham and have really enjoyed working with the architects, planning consultants and highways consultants to develop the site. This has all developed my interest in learning more about town planning and given me the opportunity to return to study at Newcastle University (MSc Urban Town Planning)I would like to use the opportunity during my studies to combine my existing knowledge of arboriculture with my passion and interest in planning to investigate how to overcome the current issues of nutrient neutrality which are affecting developments and regeneration projects throughout the country. I believe some of these issues can be mitigated through rewilding and the cohesion of trees and new developments. Rather than felling trees and clearing whole swaithes of land during the development phase, shouldn’t we be looking to preserve and incorporate the native tree population to promote the biodiversity on the land. I have researched a lot of the issues around this and have attended several discussions and meetings with other developers and planning consultants, including chartered RTPI members all of who are becoming increasingly worried about the extent of these issues.
