About Liam Huston

As an associate R&D metallurgist at Carpenter Technology, I have worked on a variety of projects to improve material properties and processing. A paper I coauthored on modeling dynamic recrystallization of a Ni-based superalloy using Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov was published at the TMS Superalloys 2024 conference. I have optimized annealing cycles to improve processability based on experimental results. I have also reduced rejection rates of alloys by analyzing data and observing material as it is processed to identify where defects are introduced and then work with others to prevent them from forming. Working at Carpenter technology, I have learned about and worked with a wide range of alloy systems, from austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, duplex, and precipitation-hardened stainless steels to Ni-based superalloys. By working with my coworkers and continuing to learn, I am able to tackle difficult and diverse problems. I am also learning to manage projects and design experiments to deliver on technical objectives.I gradated RPI with a bachelor\'s in materials science and engineering in 2023. While there, I learned from professors who are experts in their fields and studied material families including metals, polymers, and ceramics. I also got experience using computational materials modeling methods to predict kinetic and thermodynamic properties. In 2021 I interned as an R&D engineer at Bradford Shawsheen Coating Technologies where I worked on coated textiles including adhesives and non-adhesives. I developed new polymer solutions and got my first view of a manufacturing environment.
