ABOUT LEV TANKELEVITCH

I\'m a Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research, working at the intersection of HCI, cognitive science, and AI. I study how AI shapes human cognition — metacognition, critical thinking, reliance, and learning — and design AI experiences that augment rather than erode thinking in knowledge work and education.I lead research programmes spanning internal product partnerships and external academic collaborations, and manage and mentor junior researchers. My research combines rigorous mixed-methods experimentation (large-scale field studies, online and lab RCTs, longitudinal surveys, and telemetry analysis), with prototype-driven and qualitative design-led research. Internally, my work has directly shaped shipped features in Microsoft Teams, and influenced company AI design and strategy. Externally, I\'ve published 20+ papers at top-tier venues (CHI, CSCW, DIS, Computers & Education), received a CHI Best Paper Award, organised international workshops bringing together 60+ researchers, and contributed to public discourse on AI and cognition through news coverage (Forbes, Fortune, and New Scientist), and talks.Previously, I was at the Behavioural Insights Team, where I specialised in quantitative behavioural science research across health, social care, and education. I have an academic background in cognitive neuroscience.
