About Lesly Reyna Campos
As a research assistant at Rhodes College, I combine my passion for art history with my scientific expertise in chemistry. I have gained extensive experience working with Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), developing methods to quantify concentrations of chemicals of interest. I have also identified calcium oxalate in ancient rock walls, a discovery closely tied to my interest in historical artworks. In addition to my research work, I have also gained valuable experience in the museum field through internships at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art and the National Ornamental Metal Museum. I have assisted tour guides, managed supplies for field trips, guided children in art and craft activities, prepared supplies and planned weekly events, and performed data entry and record-keeping. I am proficient in maintaining engagement with student groups through effective communication and interactive presentations, and skilled in personal art research projects, contributing to the preservation and understanding of permanent collection pieces.

Research Assistant
Jan 2025 — Present · Memphis, TN, US
As a research assistant under Dr. Russ, I have had the opportunity to study rock samples containing calcium oxalate, connecting my scientific expertise to my passion for art history. I\'ve gained extensive experience working with Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), where I am developing methods to quantify concentrations of chemicals of interest. By identifying relevant peaks through FTIR, performing peak integration, and creating calibration curves, I have honed techniques to accurately determine chemical concentrations and identify calcium oxalate in ancient rock walls—a discovery closely tied to my interest in historical artworks. In addition to FTIR, I have worked with X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) for elemental analysis and to identify the elemental composition of rock samples, including a Native American rock bowl. Using Gas Chromatography (GC), I also analyzed the organic material residue found.
