About Leslie P. Silva
For the past 11 years I have been working with mass spectrometry, in an attempt to further understand several diseases, including cancer, meningitis, and the Ebola virus. I then went on to use exometabolomics (the study of the small molecule environment surrounding cells) to understand what microbes eat and secrete, both individually and in communities. The goal of this research was a deeper understanding of how microbial communities (predominantly in soil) sequester CO2 from the atmosphere.In the past, I developed a robust non-targeted metabolomic platform for looking at adherent cells, suspension cells, and blood samples, specifically focusing on cancer research. Previously, I used hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry to characterize binding sites for several proteins involved in the process of iron acquisition in meningitis (TbpA, TbpB, transferrin), and mapped the oligomerization process of intact viral protein 40 (VP40) of the Ebola virus.
