ABOUT LESELIEY WELCH

I am a public health strategist, social entrepreneur, writer, and professional dreamer guided by one core value: Love. My work centers on transforming birth care by designing and investing in community-led birth solutions that honor the inherent dignity of all people. As a co-founder of Birth Detroit and Birth Center Equity, I work to ensure that all people have access to all safe birth options. Birth Detroit opened its first freestanding community birth center in 2024, providing midwife-led, family-centered care. Birth Center Equity is a national movement to invest in Black, Indigenous, and people of color-led birth centers — scaling resources, relationships, and infrastructure to make birth centers a real option in every community. With two decades of leadership in city, state, and national health organizations—including serving as Deputy Director of Public Health for the City of Detroit—I bring deep experience in health equity, systems change, and investment strategies that center community power. My work is rooted in a beloved economy approach, where trust, collaboration, and abundance drive sustainable change. If you’re passionate about reimagining birth care and investing in community-rooted solutions, let’s connect!
