Co-developed with executive leadership, staff, and community voice for the planning and implementation of a holistic, African-Centered, environmentally sustainable green museum. Tied City of Detroit’s Sustainable Action Agenda of diverting landfill to a 5-year cross-institutional and cross-departmental collaboration.(see more: dtree.me)COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT | Held community design charrettes with public to install three Green Stormwater Infrastructure installations combining art, culture and museum mission. Worked with guest curators to develop novel solar powered Earth Month programming by solar powering a concert and conversation and solar broadcasting into three Detroit Metro neighborhoods.DIGITAL TWIN / BIM: Laser scanned and created a 3D Building Information Model with sensors for analysis and computational design.

ABOUT LESLIE TOM
Leslie Tom is the Chief Sustainability Officer at The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. In 2015, she joined the museum through Wayne State University’s Detroit Revitalization Fellowship and now leads its transformation into a Green Museum of the Future.Originally from Tucson, Leslie studied Architecture at the University of Arizona and earned her master’s in Information Management & Systems from UC Berkeley. Before working in museums, she spent over 15 years in research and design across architecture and tech, exploring how data, design, and community storytelling can shape a more sustainable world and preserve culture, heritage and humanity.At The Wright, Leslie expands the idea of sustainability beyond buildings to expand the Triple Bottom Line to do what museums do well: People, Planet, Prosperity, and Programs. Her work connects African American history and the humanities to the natural environment—helping people see how cultural heritage and climate action can grow together.
