ABOUT LEONARDO NOGUEIRA
I am a muscle biochemist and exercise physiologist with over 20 years of experience investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate skeletal muscle function, fatigue, and regeneration, particularly in the context of environmental and inflammatory stressors.Currently an Assistant Professor at San Diego State University, I lead federal and state-funded research projects exploring how cigarette smoke exposure and chronic pulmonary inflammation impair skeletal and respiratory muscle performance, repair, and mitochondrial function. My research spans from single-myofiber contractility assays to in vivo muscle injury models, integrating tools from molecular biology, imaging, and redox signaling. My academic journey has included appointments at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Duke University, and UC San Diego, and my work has been published in The Journal of Physiology, PNAS, and American Journal of Physiology, among others. I’ve had the privilege of mentoring over 25 undergraduate and graduate students, and I actively serve on editorial boards for the Journal of Applied Physiology, American Journal of Physiology, and Frontiers in Physiology.I am deeply committed to fostering collaborative research across academic and industry settings. I welcome opportunities to partner with fellow scientists, biotech innovators, and cross-disciplinary teams to advance our understanding of muscle biology and accelerate the development of interventions that improve muscle health and performance.
