As a Visitor Engagement Volunteer at Penrhyn Castle, I support the National Trust team in creating welcoming and meaningful experiences for visitors. ABOUT LEKSHMI DIVAKARAN
MA Global Heritage graduate with a background in History, I specialise in the study of colonial collections, decolonisation, and the ethical challenges facing museums today. My research critically examines how imperial power, cultural memory, and identity shape the presentation and understanding of heritage. My MA dissertation focused on the Clive Collection at Powis Castle, analysing its complex histories of acquisition, the narratives constructed around these objects, and the contrasting ways contemporary British and Indian audiences interpret them. Using interdisciplinary methods including archival research, policy analysis, museum observation, interviews, and questionnaires. I explored issues of provenance, transparency, emotional resonance, and the role of institutional responsibility in contested heritage. I am broadly interested in heritage ethics, postcolonial theory, cultural memory, restitution debates, and the use of digital and spatial tools such as GIS and AI to reveal marginalized perspectives. I aim to pursue doctoral research that contributes to ongoing debates on decolonizing museums, global heritage governance, and the responsibilities of institutions in interpreting colonial-era histories.
