ABOUT LEILA STRICKLAND

I’m a biologist and scientific communicator with diverse skills and varied interests. My background includes a PhD (Boston College) and postdoctoral study (Stanford University) in cell biology, with expertise in microscopy, cell culture, and molecular biology. After my post-doc, I co-founded a biotech start-up in the field of cellular agriculture, working on technology to produce milk from cultured cells (108Labs). This has been an ambitious project that I have supported at times as an unconventional hobby, in the grand tradition of tinkering, and at times as a full-throttle, furious pursuit of nothing less than the betterment of our health and our planet. I cofounded BIOMILQ in 2019 based on the work that I began with 108Labs, with the aim of producing human milk from cultured mammary cells as an infant feeding option. Early nutrition is critical for developmental outcomes, however, only a small minority of babies receive the recommended 6 months duration of exclusive breastfeeding. We are working to produce human milk outside the body, making it easier for parents to provide critical nutrients that are not present in bovine-based infant formula.
