ABOUT LEILANI ALONTAGA CAITHNESS
Leilani Alontaga-Caithness has worked in museums and art galleries in the U.S. and U.K, including the award-winning Aberdeen Archives, Gallery and Museums in Aberdeen, Scotland, U.K. and the University of Aberdeen, Special Collections and Museums, Scotland\'s 3rd oldest university (est. 1493) overseeing cultural art and artifacts of international significance. Currently, Leilani oversees the research and development of three distinct collections held within the Research Archives at the San Diego History Center and Junipero Serra Museum in the Presidio that encompass Fine Art, Historic Textiles and 3-D Objects which total objects. Her experience ranges from working with modern and contemporary art collections and galleries to managing a major federally funded curatorial project that involved inventorying, rehousing, digitizing and cataloguing objects across various collections, scopes and periods. Leilani has also published her writing in catalogs, original exhibition text, didactics and also, scholarly journals. Drawing on previous experience and knowledge, Leilani\'s goal is to contribute to the ongoing discourse within complex histories of those excluded from the cultural and artistic canon and who are part of the Latinx, Chicanx, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities, researching issues related to art and social/economic injustice, racism and sexism. Her work is informed by the idea that art exists intrinsically in relation to particular social moments in history. Art can represent contemporary reality and can also be leveraged to challenge cultural narratives, and inspire powerful emotional responses and critical thinking in a way that is distinct from traditional political discourse. This work can also be done with a focus on sustainability and the environment.A fluent Spanish speaker and writer who was raised in San Diego, Baja California, and Hawaii, Leilani is also a disability rights advocate who believes in the inclusion of marginalized individuals, communities, artists and ethnic groups in both scholarly discourse and public narratives with a particular interest in mixed-media art and women artists.
