About Leila Jerome Clay

Dr. E. Leila Jerome Clay. MD, MCTS, FAAP is an accomplished hamatologist in both clinical and research settings now a Medical Director of Hemoglobinopathies for the Rare Disease Team in Clinical, Medical, and Regulatory Affairs at Novo Nordisk. She previously served as International Medical Director for clinical development M&S RD & AT where has had numerous responsibilities across projects in Sickle cell disease (SCD) and Thalassemia. Prior to joining Novo Nordisk, Leila served as Medical Director at Forma Therapeutics and played a crucial role during the transition of etavopivat project into Novo Nordisk.She was previously Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology/Oncology at Johns Hopkins University and the director of the Sickle Cell Program at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital.Dr. Clay received her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Anthropology from New York University. She later earned her Medical Doctorate from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA.She subsequently completed her Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at Rutgers / New Jersey Medical School. She finished Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship at University of North Carolina Hospitals, Chapel Hill, NC with a focus in Sickle Cell Disease. She also obtained a Masters of Clinical and Translational Science during her joined appointment at Augusta University.Dr. Clay treats children, adolescents and young adults with rare blood disorders such as sickle cell disease. Her research focused on the mechanistic contribution of vitamin D deficiency and bone disease and its effects of disease manifestation of sickle cell disease. She also previously served as the director of Sickle Cell Disease Transition at Augusta University Sickle Cell Center where she played the role of a physician navigator in transitioning adolescent care to adult care.Her primary professional objective is to translate her clinical research to the field.
