ABOUT LEELA DE PAULA
I am a Brazilian-Bulgarian feminist scholar and organizer who grew up in Boston, MA and Tamil Nadu, India and am now based in Brooklyn, NY. My life purpose is to serve as an advocate for anti-colonial feminist movements rooted in community self-governance through impact litigation, movement journalism, and grassroots organizing. I am currently a full-time 2L at the CUNY School of Law studying movement lawyering - a practice that uses legal knowledge to defend, bolster, and uplift human rights movements challenging the neoliberal capitalist system. My academic interests include Feminist Jurisprudence and Postcolonial Legal Critique. I ground my work in addressing systemic violence against women, building student power, and community organizing. In May 2023, I graduated from Smith College with a double major in Political Science & The Study of Women and Gender, serving as Student Body President as well as founding the Advocacy for Equity Council / Student Power Coalition on campus that continues to defend and care for marginalized students.
