Twenty years ago, fresh into the role as Plant Manager for an American Corporation, a small package landed on my desk post marked Michigan USA. The package contained a book entitled ‘Lean Thinking’, it was from my new boss in Grand Rapids with a note attached saying “Read this and we can talk about your plans for the Plant when I come over next week”…needless to say, I was terrified. The truth is, I had no need to be as I had some great coaches in the form of highly experienced plant managers from US who were only too willing to offer encouragement, guidance and support. We grew the plant turnover to over £19m and became more agile and responsive as we applied Lean thinking across the business.The learning experience was incredible and over time Lean principles were fully embraced at all levels by my amazing team at the Plant – yes there were some wrong turns and a few knocks and bruises along the way, but this was all an important part of the learning journey.These days, with a proven track record as a Lean practitioner and Change agent I work with organisations to develop their People and optimise their processes, improving Quality, Performance and Productivity.For the last 12 years or so I have worked with a small team of specialists delivering Lean, Six Sigma and Leadership and Management development programmes to a wide range of businesess across all sectors including Civil Nuclear, Offshore Wind, Rail, Healthcare, Aerospace & Automotive.
