ABOUT LEAH WHITFIELD
I attend UNC Chapel Hill and will graduate in December of 2024 with a BS in Neuroscience and Biology and a minor in Chemistry. After graduation, I plan to apply for graduate school and pursue a career in Virology and Gene Therapy. Since May 2022, I have worked in the Hirsch Lab with AAV and learned about its applications to gene therapy. Currently, I am working on preventing the theoretical issue of AAV mobilization by rationally designing a Rep protein with an extended nicking site and by finding a unique ITR that it can use as a replication origin. In May 2024, I gave an oral presentation the work I have done so far on this project at the 27th annual meeting of the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy. In addition to my coursework and research, I was an undergraduate teaching assistant for General Physics I at UNC. I later was a peer mentor and later supplemental instructor for Molecular Genetics. In October of 2023, I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. I also participated in clubs such as Carolina Thrift, the Red Cross Club, and TriBeta.
