About Leah Metsker

Masters of Engineering student at Duke University in Medical Technology Design. Graduated with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the UMass Amherst, with greatest distinction from the Commonwealth Honors College. I’m passionate for using my personal experience as a female athlete with chronic injury and undergoing surgery recovery, to improve diagnostic, surgical outcomes, and recovery for other patients. Industry experience in the medical device field as an R&D Systems Engineer Intern at Fresenius Medical Care for 2 summers. Gained valuable experience in quality documentation following and developing TPs, SOPs, WIs and using Agile quality management system. Translational skills of root cause analysis, problem solving, and collaboration with experienced engineers. Completed an Honors Senior Thesis: “The Effect of Asymmetrical Surface Stiffness Walking on Gait Kinematics and Kinetics” in Dr. Hoogkamers Integrative Locomotion Lab, which explored changes in joint kinematics and kinetics after walking on a dual-belt asymmetrical stiffness treadmill. I developed strong skills in clinical research, technical writing, human subject data collection, and motion capture and musculoskeletal data analysis. Design experience with academic projects including redesigning a cystoscope and vaginal speculum in Fusion360, developing a heat therapy knee brace for OA for my senior design project, designing a hemostatic valve for a vascular catheter, and a bipolar ablation probe for irreversible electroporation.Organized, creative, and collaborative student, with a strong academic record and extensive research experience. Skilled in motion capture, musculoskeletal modeling, 3D CAD, and technical writing.
