About L. Cliff Brett

I was between majors as an MIT undergraduate when I visited the Media Lab for the first time. It was almost like meeting my wife for the first time, many years later: love at first sight, a visceral and irrefutable recognition that this was right. I quickly declared my new major and started learning about computer-generated imagery. I’ve worked different jobs on different projects in different studios since then. I’ve done shot work and I’ve written code. I’ve been an individual contributor and I’ve managed teams of dozens of artists. I got restless along the way-dabbled in games for awhile, got an MBA, even tried management consulting and starting my own venture. But somehow I always found myself coming back home to filmmaking. It’s not just the medium itself but something about the artists who work in it. I just love working with them. Over the last few years I’ve been thinking more and more about how we work: how we organize ourselves, how we track what we do, the theory behind our production pipelines vs how they work in actual practice. The advent of USD and its growing adoption across the industry is just one indication that we’re on the cusp of significant changes to the way we do things.
