ABOUT MAGGIE CHENG
Being a prosecutor demands humility and leaves no room for personal ego. We study the law thoroughly, prepare relentlessly, and fight hard for the safety of the community. If the day ever comes when crime magically disappears, I will gladly trade the courtroom for a beachside restaurant, spending my days talking to people about scuba diving. My research subject is Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLATs). MLATs are formal agreements between countries that establish frameworks for cooperation in criminal investigations and prosecutions. This research examines how MLAT mechanisms can be improved to help governments reduce institutional and procedural bias, enhance mutual understanding of differing legal systems, and strengthen cross-border collaboration. Ultimately, effective MLATs should prioritize the protection and support of victims while enabling law enforcement agencies to more efficiently identify, investigate, and prosecute criminal activity.
