ABOUT SHEILA L.

With 5+ years of experience in post-secondary student services, I am a highly adaptable Career Development Practitioner resolved in providing an inclusive, student-focused approach to my career development practice. A UTM alumni with an Honours Bachelor of Sciences in Psychology and double minor in Business and Sociology, I obtained the Career Development Practitioner Post-Graduate Certificate at George Brown College after I ignited my curiousity in the career development field from my work-study position at the UTM Career Centre. I thrive when I see students charged with motivation to pursue their career goals. My role is to provide student-focused career services that spark curiosity and empower students in reaching their goals by providing tailored and concrete action plans to link students’ unique interests, values, and skillsets to career goals and academic choices in a meaningful way. I am a committed life-long learner and I aim to be an empathetic professional that flexibly and creatively adapts to diverse student needs to help actualize their full career potential. Outside of work, I also enjoy mentoring peers, supporting people with disabilities, advocating for universal rights, singing, and performing traditional Chinese dances on TV.Key Skills and Attributes:‍ Service Oriented - Awarded the “Grasping Active Listening” award and promoted to Senior Career Assistant at the UTM Career Centre for stellar customer service. Empathetic - Exhibited strong active listening skills and empathy through appropriate open and closed questions when assisting students with career exploration, paraphrased and reflected their concerns with sensitivity, and summarized to ensure that students’ questions have been fully addressed.‍ Workshop Facilitator - Developed and facilitated workshops and roundtable discussions both in-person and virtually, ensuring everyone’s voices were heard, and providing attendees with useful resources they can take away. Strong Researcher - Conducted extensive industry research through reputable online and offline sources, such as academic papers, reliable websites, prominent newspapers, and attendance at conferences with industry and academic professionals.🤝 Inclusive - Demonstrated commitment to delivering inclusive service while respecting diverse backgrounds through continued learning of barriers faced by marginalized groups in gender and Indigenous advocacy work, and through flexibly communicating and meeting the needs of individuals with mental health, developmental, learning, and visual disabilities.
