ABOUT LAUREN R.

I recently graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and am looking to make the world a better place through advocacy. I\'m interested in human rights work, mainly in the contexts of environmental justice work and criminal justice reform. For the past two years, I have advocated for Pitt’s undergraduate students through the Student Government Board. First, I held the role of Communications Director, through which I sharpened my public communication and social media skills, and, most recently, I held the role of Vice President, which has allowed me to more directly represent the interests of students to Pitt administration. In this time, I have also developed experience in working with community members and using data to address their concerns. In collaboration with both students and community members in the Allegheny County Policing Project, I have helped build a database that presents hard-to-find police misconduct process data in an accessible fashion. I have further interacted with data practices through my time as a Responsible Data Scholar, which I’ve explored a myriad of best practices for ethical usage of data, and through my Sustainability Capstone course, which involved collaborating with a local nonprofit to enhance their environmental justice data mapping and analysis. Outside of Pitt, I have spent my summers at my childhood summer camp, where I’ve enhanced my capacity to work in high-pressure situations, gained experience working with children, and improved my event programming skills.
