About Lauren Callahan

Dr. Lauren Callahan is a senior professional staff member in the National Security Analysis Department. Her work at APL includes research on planetary defense policy and strategy, nuclear hardness and survivability, wargame design and evaluation, arms control, and nuclear deterrence.Prior to joining APL, Dr. Callahan completed her Ph.D. in physics at the University of Notre Dame as an Arthur J. Schmitt Fellow, focusing on nuclear experimental physics. Her dissertation centered on the commissioning and experimental use of a new ionization chamber, MONICA, through six experimental runs employing four unique setups at the Nuclear Science Laboratory at Notre Dame and the ATLAS facility at Argonne National Laboratory. Her experimental results include a measurement of ³⁹Ar and the first detection of ⁴²Ar at ultra-low levels as part of a collaboration with the National Ignition Facility, as well as the first utilization of the Argonne Gas-Filled Analyzer for AMS.Before pursuing her doctorate, Dr. Callahan worked as a software engineer specializing in Salesforce-based solutions and as a technical consultant for Salesforce implementations.
