ABOUT LAURENCE WEIR
Over the last 12 years working in a diverse range of industries and sectors and has a broad range on engineering skills and experiences. Worked for Broadcom, developing a multimedia processor for low power mobile applications. In the systems group, I gained experience of software, hardware and ASIC development, in order to create development boards which demonstrated all the fuctionality and interfaces of the processor. This included creating high speed digital lines for HDMI, display and camera serial interfaces, and USB. Knowledge of the drivers and receivers of these signals was required to make sure the PCBs did not degrade the performance of these interfaces. One of the boards that he developed went on to be an early prototype for the Raspberry Pi project. Spent 3 years working on miniature actuators that fit inside mobile phone cameras. As well as developing the control systems for the actuator, I was heavily involved in the technical marketing of the product. This involved travelling to very high volume manufacturers of components, subsystems and mobile phones to demonstrate the functionality of the actuator, and discuss the future of the possible market. These manufactureres were primarily far-east based, such as Foxconn and Samsung. However, there were also projects supporting companies based in Silicon Valley and Germany. I have further experience working in the biotechnology, medical and defence sectors.
