I provide overall legal support for enterprise companies, with a focus on planning, implementing, and managing IP strategies. As a member of the leadership team of our companies, my support includes strategic counseling, licensing, competitive analysis, training, and education. Once our companies require full-time dedicated counsel, my role transitions to ongoing advising and support. My responsibilities also include developing enterprise-wide policies and training on a variety of special topics in IP and adjacent areas. Current and previous companies I’ve supported include Ampersand Biomedicines, Metaphore Biotechnologies, Generate Biomedicines, Cellarity, Tessera Therapeutics, and Empress Therapeutics. As IP lead of our Pioneering Medicines division, I am part of the PM leadership and interface with the leadership of our portfolio companies and external parties, such as our strategic partners Pfizer, Novo Nordisk, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

ABOUT LAURENCE SHUMWAY
My practice is anchored on patent counseling, prosecution, licensing, and enforcement, with particular technical expertise in the life and chemical sciences, including their interfaces with high tech. Partnering with business leadership, I drive a variety of general R&D legal and business activities in addition to my intellectual property roles. One of my favorite activities is education-empowering employees right from on-boarding to business leadership facing tough decisions. Whether mining and strategizing around complex inventions, building patent estates, or evaluating 3rd party IP, I enjoy rolling up my sleeves and getting into the weeds.
