ABOUT LAUREN BERNY
I am currently a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. In this role, I contribute to ongoing research at the National Center on Youth Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery while also advancing my own program of research on social processes underlying substance use and recovery. In September 2025, I received my PhD in Prevention Science, with specializations in Data Science and Quantitative Research Methods from the University of Oregon. My dissertation research—funded by an R36 substance use dissertation grant from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute on Drug Abuse—tested recovery-positive peer affiliation as an underlying mechanism of recovery high schools’ effects on substance use. In the future, I hope to continue conducting impactful research on social processes in youth and young adult substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery.
