About Lauren Hart
I am an alumni of The University of Texas at Austin with a BS in Biology and Spanish. Currently, I am a Ph.D candidate in the Program of Chemical Biology (PCB) working with Dr. David H. Sherman at the Life Sciences Institute and Dr. Gregory J. Dick in Earth and Environmental Sciences to understand the dangerous biosynthetic patterns of toxic cyanobacteria in Lake Erie, USA and Lake Victoria, Kenya. My work is particularly focused on the toxic molecules produced by cyanobacteria in freshwater systems and how we can develop methods to assess their human health risk towards coastal communities and drinking water availability. By understanding the chemical and biological diversity in our ecosystems, we can protect, restore, and maintain them more efficiently through strategic land and nutrient-use plans, varying management approaches, and collaboration between the private and public sectors.
