About Laura C. Markley
Dr. Laura Markley has 20 years of experience in toxicology and specializes in human health risk assessment, food safety, genotoxicity, metals toxicology, nanotoxicology, and carcinogenesis. She currently is a Toxicologist in the Human Food Program at the US Food and Drug Administration where she reviews pre-market notifications of food contact substances and GRAS substances and navigates complex post-market issues related to regulatory science, safety review, and policy. She received her BS in Biology from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Maine, and postdoctoral training at the US FDA in CDRH.Dr. Markley has an expertise in genetic toxicology and currently serves on the OECD Genetic Toxicology Expert Group, International Workshops on Genotoxicity Testing (IWGT) Steering Committee, Health and Environmental Sciences Institute (HESI) Genetic Toxicology Technical Committee (GTTC), OPMAS Genetic Tox Team, the CDER Genetic Toxicology Subcommittee and the secretary of the Genetic Toxicology Association. Her leadership experience extends to the Society of Toxicology including: SOT Nominating Committee, Food Safety Specialty Section presidential chain, National Capital Area Regional Chapter presidential chain and Metals Specialty Section Councilor. Dr. Markley is passionate about guiding the next generation of toxicologists. She serves as a mentor in the UM/FDA JIFSAN program, CFSAN Career Development Mentoring Program, and the DFCS Mentoring Program. She has helped organize student mentoring luncheons and trainee webinars within the SOT. In her 9 years of teaching a 2-day class on risk assessment at the University of Louisville, she aims to equip students with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed for real-world challenges.
