ABOUT LAURA ULLRICH

I believe that every student deserves quality academic advising throughout each stage of their academic journey. I may not know all of the answers, but it is my responsibility to know the appropriate campus resources and empower the student to discover the answers for themselves by guiding them in the right direction. Academic advising is not “one size fits all”, and I have the opportunity to assist each individual student in recognizing the links between their unique set of courses and their future career possibilities, while also helping them understand that it’s okay for plans to change. Though I try to make each student feel that they are truly unique and significant, I also explore and support efforts to stretch limited resources and reach a greater number of students. As an academic advisor, I must demonstrate problem solving and creative thinking skills on a daily basis in helping my students fulfill their academic goals. Academic advising requires that I encourage and challenge my students—often simultaneously—as I help them recognize that they learn just as much outside the classroom as they do in their lecture halls. In my efforts to provide fair and consistent advising services in alignment with university policies and practices, I recognize that I will not be able to please every single student. I can, however, invest the time it takes to truly listen to a student’s concerns and help them find alternative solutions. My roles vary—I shift from being an educator to a cheerleader to an enforcer to a counselor many times throughout the day. I rely on the support and guidance of my supervisor, and the collective strength of my advising team. I pride myself in treating each student with respect as I make every attempt to give them accurate guidance in regards to their academic plan. In all that I do, I encourage my students to view their education as an investment in lifelong learning.
