Laura Strater is a Raytheon Engineering Fellow who leads the Advanced User Experience Team within Collins in the BMC2 Autonomy Engineering Organization. She is responsible for leading a team in defining, applying and updating user-centered design processes to deliver mission capabilities that meet user needs. She guides, directs and conducts user research using qualitative and quantitative methods to develop advanced capabilities that delight end users. She has over 25 years of experience in Human Factors Engineering with an emphasis on Situation Awareness (SA), Cognitive Ergonomics and Decision-Making, Human to Machine Teaming, and User Experience (UX). Prior to joining Raytheon in 2015, Laura was the VP of Innovation and Business Development at SA Technologies, Inc, a world leader in the research, design, measurement, modeling, and training of Situation Awareness (SA). Her research was focused on identifying SA requirements – the information users need to meet their objectives and make effective decisions; measuring SA in both experimental and operational settings; cognitive modeling of SA and trust in automation. Laura received her BS in Industrial Engineering from Texas Tech University and completed the coursework for a PhD in Human Development/ Communication Science - Cognition and Neuroscience - University of Texas at Dallas. At Raytheon/Collins, Laura has applied her research background to solve complex problems for mission-critical systems, where the consequences of poor decisions can be severe, and where increasing automation and the characteristic opacity of advanced automation, including AI/ML, can complicate human decision processes and impede effective human automation collaboration. She strives to introduce Human Factors considerations early, so human capabilities and limitations are factored into the solution from the start, and works to maintain that focus throughout system design and development activities.
