With 20+ years’ experience in energy and natural resources, working on energy policy, regulations and development, Laura S. Nelson, Ph.D, is a visionary leader and economist. An industry thought leader, she has testified before state legislatures and US Congress, served as energy advisor to UT Governors Huntsman and Herbert, and advised public and private corporations, nonprofits and government agencies on energy initiatives, clean energy innovation, and solutions across energy resources.Laura has developed innovative energy plans, including driving deployment for UT’s clean energy system—facilitating $200M+ in US DOE grants for clean energy development, forging the 1st-ever energy education program (~$100K in energy scholarships in <3 years), and growing clean energy development 14X+ in <5 years. She created the platform for UT’s unique, 1st-ever Energy Infrastructure Authority Board, realizing $2B+ in new infrastructure project opportunities. A forward-thinking, agile strategist, Laura is skilled at integrating political, regulatory, operational, technical & competitive trends with business goals, while leading regulatory and stakeholder management. Laura has deep board experience: she chaired the Utah Energy Infrastructure Board, Governor’s Energy Advisory Council, Western Interstate Energy Board, and Utah Transmission Task Force; served as Vice Chair for the National Association of Energy Officers, Co-Chair of NARUC-NASEO Task Force, Electricity Planning, and serves on the INL Strategic Advisory Committee. She has advised on environmental matters, social programs, and governance to advance state goals and commercial activities.
