About Laura Custer
Dr. Laura Custer is currently a Scientific Senior Director and the Head of Genetic and Occupational Toxicology in the department of Nonclinical Safety at Bristol-Myers Squibb, in New Brunswick, NJ. Laura’s principal responsibilities include providing scientific leadership, drug development strategy, and subject matter expertise in the areas of regulatory genotoxicity testing, in silico evaluation of impurities, and providing responses to Health Authority questions regarding genotoxicity and impurities issues in pharmaceuticals.Laura has been an active member of the Environmental Molecular and Genomics Society (EMGS)for more than 20 years as a speaker and has presented numerous posters on MutaMouse transgenic mutation, SHE cell transformation, in silico mutagenicity prediction, and micronucleus, comet, and Pig-a gene mutation assays. She was elected to the EMGS Executive Board serving as Treasurer for the 20••••20 term. Laura is also active in the Genetic Toxicology Association, where she served on the Scientific Program Committee, and was elected to the Board of Directors (20••••15) and as Chair of Board of Directors responsible for the 2014 GTA meeting. Laura received her B.S. in Microbiology from the Pennsylvania State University, and then gained experience in the field of genetic toxicology at Hazleton Laboratories (Covance) for 3 years before returning to graduate school. Laura received a Ph.D. in Chemistry from American University in Washington DC, where her research concentrated on DNA repair of stereospecific BP diol-epoxides. After graduating, Laura joined Discovery Toxicology at Bristol-Myers Squibb, where she has held a variety of positions with increasing responsibilities. Laura has authored multiple papers and book chapters on the subjects of predictive mutagenicity, in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity, and genetic toxicology regulatory strategy.
