Intergovernmental Affairs Specialist, Tribal Affairs
Jul 2021 — Present · WA, US
As an Intergovernmental Affairs Specialist and Tribal Liaison at FEMA, my primary responsibility is to support the 574 federally-recognized Tribal Nations across the ten FEMA regions in order to carry out FEMA’s mission to help people and communities before, during, and after disasters. Working closely with FEMA’s National Tribal Affairs Advocate and Advisor, FEMA Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA) Director and Deputy Director, I engage Tribal Nations and Tribal partners to advance emergency preparedness and management readiness and capability by promoting and coordinating technical assistance and training, and by increasing Tribal access to FEMA programs, funding, and resources. Helps develop, revise, and implement policies designed to enhance relationships between FEMA and Tribal Nations. Assisted with drafting and facilitating the implementation of the 20••••26 FEMA National Tribal Strategy and Tribal Declarations Guidance policy update, which are paths towards building stronger Nation-to-Nation partnerships between Tribal Nations and FEMA and a more prepared and resilient nation. Performs routine desk reviews and dissemination of other FEMA policy documents and advisories and drafts various annual reports for IGA and Office of External Affairs leadership to meet our obligations to Tribal Nations. Lead author of FEMA\'s 2023 & 2024 National Tribal Strategy Annual Progress Reports to ensure our commitment and accountability to the Tribal Nations that played a pivotal role in shaping this strategy.During disasters, deploys to National Response Coordination Center (NRCC) National Tribal Advisor Desk at FEMA HQ to assist Tribal Nations in impact zones. At NRCC, coordinates with federal (BIA, IHS, DOI) and NGO partners (e.g, American Red Cross) and Regional FEMA staff to assist Tribes as they move toward preparedness before and recovery after disasters (e.g, Hurricanes Ida, Ian, Fiona, Hilary, Idalia, Lee, Debby, Beryl, Francine, Helene, Milton; Typhoon Merbok).
